Maremma goes to School

By Nicola Downes

When my G.C.S.E English class was asked to do an oral presentation on a “hobby” my mind went blank, that is before I came home and saw that I had actually a large, hairy and overly lazy hobby, my dogs! When I asked my teacher if breeding was a suitable hobby, she delightfully agreed to let me bring my “puppy” in ,being of course our youngest Maremma Vienna, who was at the time 11months old.

When my turn came, I went and brought “little” Vienna in, who was met with loud cries of “AWWW!” and “that is a puppy!?”. Throughout my presentation, Vienna sat quite happily between my legs, chased her tail and spent a large amount of time examining a friends pencil case with perhaps a little too much enthusiasm., I explained how Vienna was a puppy from the last litter we had, and that her brother was in the car outside. My teacher, completely besotted with little Vienna promptly went and returned with the other two English teachers, all of whom cooed over her happily.

Vienna, in true Maremma style and as I was explaining what Maremma’s were bred for and that they were a guarding breed, rolled onto the floor and grinned madly at my class mates, causing fits of laughter. Vienna seemed to get bored after this belly dancing display, and thought it a good idea to liven up the talk by jumping up and giving me kisses… such a show off!

I’m fairly sure they had no idea what my talk was about, as every eye in the class was focused on Vivi!. Still, I got an A!
